World IP Day 2018

Every April 26, we celebrate World Intellectual Property Day to learn about the role that intellectual property rights (patents, trademarks, industrial designs, copyright) play in encouraging innovation and creativity.

This year’s World Intellectual Property Day campaign celebrates the brilliance, ingenuity, curiosity and courage of the women who are driving change in our world and shaping our common future.

This year’s World Intellectual Property Day saw the IPOPNG in collaboration with FM 100 host a talk-back show on 25th April 2018 and the main event was a miniature exhibition at the Vision City Mega Mall amphitheater, Waigani, Port Moresby on 26th April 2018. In line with this year’s theme “Powering Change: Women in Innovation and Creativity” the office had engaged different women in the Creative Industry and also young women entrepreneurs to showcase their creativity in the different forms from arts and craft, to fashion, to innovations in the food industry and cosmetics.

  • There were performances by one of the country’s leading female artists Mereani Masani and a young non-recording artist young Irau Joe, the daughter of local artist Jessie Joe. Mereani is a young lady who has uses her music to advocate for Womens rights in todays male dominated society.
  • The miniature exhibition was an eye-opener for the general public. The booths that were set up all featured some form of creativity and innovation from Loa Samuel and her coconut crafts,  Ruth Cleo Bannon and  her Melanesian and African inspired Jewelry and Dolarose Trawen and her PNG inspired Tailored Fabrics and clothing.
  • In the field of health care and beauty Ernestine Cole a female Entrepreneur was also on hand with her representative to showcase the Natural Organic beauty products made from the humble coconut and infused with essential oils from Lemongrass, Frangipani, vanilla etc.
  • The Caritas Girls Technical Secondary School also took part in the celebration showcasing for the very first time to the general public the unique dressmaking skills that are being taught at the school. These young ladies work in teams using only a roll of fabric and fabric pins, indeed a site to behold truly capturing the essence of what creativity is all about.

This year’s theme reminds us of the need for all of us to ensure that we do not lose sight of the important and inspiring contributions of countless women around the globe that is powering change in our world. Their “can do” attitude is an inspiration to us all. And their remarkable achievements are an invaluable legacy for young girls today with aspirations to become the inventors and creators of tomorrow.
