The Investment Promotion Authority through the Intellectual Property Office of PNG (IPOPNG) hosted the 46th Intellectual Property Rights Experts Group (IPEG) Plenary (Meeting) on 27th & 28th February 2018. This was part of the APEC Senior Officials cluster of meetings held from 24th to 9th March 2018. The IPEG comes under the Committee of Trade and Investment (CTI) within the APEC forum.
The IPO also hosted and facilitated a one day APEC Workshop on “Trademark Infringement Determinations in a Border Enforcement Context,” an initiative and an ongoing project by the United States.
The IPEG meeting was focused on the usual APEC trade and investment agenda including policy discussions as well as developments on the current status of IP protection and administrative systems, and enforcement efforts amongst the APEC Member Economies. Furthermore discussion also included collaborative work and efforts and technical cooperation amongst member economies in implementing the Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Agreement and dealing with emerging fields of IP.
The Workshop on Trademark Infringements on the other hand, was aimed at enhancing and identifying protected trademarks and strengthens enforcement at the border for counterfeit and infringing goods. It also discussed the role of Government in addressing trademark misappropriation and infringement, how and why we should build relationship with brand owners, border enforcement strategies and turning customs and border enforcement violations into criminal cases. The workshop also focused on increasing consumer confidence in product integrity; identify priorities of various parties and integrating them into a cohesive action plan. It attracted both local and international participants from Customs and Border Enforcement Officials, and IP offices. PNG participants included officers from PNG Customs, Department of Justice and Attorney General’s Office, Department of Prime Minister and NEC, Department of Foreign Affairs and IPOPNG.
The IPO will also be hosting the remainder of the IPEG Meetings in August of this year.
